BASED ON A TRUE STORY
May, 1980. Man-seob (SONG Kang-ho) is a taxi driver in Seoul who lives from hand to mouth, raising his young daughter alone after his wife passed away with high hospital bills behind. One day, he hears that there is a foreigner who’s willing to pay big money for a drive down to Gwangju city and back. Not knowing that the foreigner is a German journalist (Thomas Kretschmann) with a hidden agenda to investigate the strange rumors of Gwangju, Man-seob takes the job and the two start off on their journey together.

CHANG Hun honed his directorial skills as an assistant director to [KIM Ki-duk] along with [JANG Cheol-soo] and [JUHN Jai-hong], but makes movies that are much more commercial than those three combined. Unlike most prospective directors who want to debut with their own scripts, CHANG is uniquely unattached to his original scripts. So much so that his debut film, <Rough Cut> (2008), was written and produced by [KIM Ki-duk]. KIM’s presence is felt in parts of the movie, but it is much more commercially orientated than KIM’s own movies in that the film does not hesitate to radiate the appeals of its two leading actors, [SO Ji-sub] and [KANG Ji-hwan]. CHANG’s second feature, <Secret Reunion> (2010), benefited even more from the director’s populist sensibility. A story about two agents, one from South Korea and the other from the North, who approach each other in acts of espionage only to end up friends in the end, <Secret Reunion> was one of the audience’s favorites in 2010. CHANG’s most recent feature <The Front Line> was a large-scale war movie that was presented during the 2011 summer blockbuster season. Starring [KO Soo] and [SHIN Ha-kyun], the film was the most polished and complete film among the ample amount of Korean War-themed films and TV dramas commemorating the 60th year anniversary of the war. Through the guise a mystery narrative, the film captured the story of South and North Korean soldiers carrying out meaningless sacrifices trying to capture a nameless hill.
